This should not be all that surprising?

The ARRL Receiver tests shows the 20m MDS of the
Omni VI to be -133 dBm, while the MDS of the 1000MP
with pre-amp is -136 dBm (it drops to -128 dBm
with preamp turned off).

Further, the 1000MP with INRAD mod (Cutsogeorge data)
has an MDS of -142 dBm (!) with preamp on and still a
very respectable -134 dBm with it off (caveat: I have
no idea which band this was measure on).

With these numbers, you are bound to be able to dig out
a weak one better with an INRAD MP than with the Omni...
if there are no loud stations close by.

Just depends on your operating conditions and band conditions,
I think. It might be worth rerunning the experiment during a
contest when there are a mix of strong and weak stations.

The dynamic range of the Omni VI is 97 dB, while the dynamic
range of the stock MP are 94dB and 97dB (with and without
preamp) and the INRAD MP are only 90 dB and 93 dB. In additon,
the 2 kc phase noise of the Omni is also 6 dB lower than the
MP.
