One use of memories could be for scanning selected frequencies.

For DXers, they might store a DXpedition's announced transmit frequencies
 on each band/mode and continuously scan them for activity.

For 10-meter FMers, they could store the popular 10-meter FM frequencies
and or repeater frequencies and scan them for activity.

Memory scanning is covered in the manual, but requires the use of a
button on the Yaesu microphone for the scan feature to work unless you
have the program named "MPmem" which is freeware and is available for
download from VA3CR's FT-1000MP Web site.  Mpmem is a memory manager
program for all models of MP and does many things, one of which is a
scanning feature which does not require the Yaesu microphone.
