Assuming the ARRL's test is sound, it seems to me that it is critical to
know, under the same test conditions, how the various modifications
perform. I was amused to read, in both the MP and Mark 5 expanded reports,
the judgment that "this radio has excellent keying characteristics,"
although the spectrum analyzer test was apparently not done. No such
judgment appears in the Field report, nor is there anything critical said.
The test conditions in the Field report seem to be specified in sufficient
detail to duplicate them for other radios in the MP series, stock and
modified, and for other radios in the same class. I'll deliver my
unmodified Mark 5, if someone nearby (DC/Philadelphia area) wants to do the
test, and will arrange to put the spectrum analyzer traces on the
web. Who'll do the same with other radios?
