Just as there appears to be empirical evidence that some MPs click,
there also appears to be empirical evidence that some don't. I would
rather accept all of the evidence and conclude that there are
differences among the rigs. If Yaesu has modified their circuitry to
address the problem, I would like to know about it. In fact, I WILL
know about it before I buy a MK5.
I hate key clicks and splatter. In the early days of amateur radio,
"The Old Man" referred to "rotten signals" in his QST editorials. Key
clicks and splatter are "rotten signals" in my book and need to be
tended to just as much today as they did in Hiram Percy Maxim's days.
Just because someone spends a bunch of money on the latest (and
supposedly, greatest) rig doesn't absolve them from the responsibility
of putting out a clean signal. I absolutely believe that if a new rig
clicks or splatters when operated according to the manufacturer's
instructions, it is the responsibility of the manufacturer to fix the
rig and the owner not to use it until it is clean. Put slightly
differently, I believe that it is my responsibility to not buy a rig
that has such problems. Once the manufacturers understand that, maybe
they will spare us all of this angst! 8^)
