And a smart change it will be. I really enjoy CW, but recognize that it
has almost ZERO appeal to the majority of potential new hams and remains
a significant barrier of entry to the hobby.
The world today is a very different place than in 1974 when I became a
ham at age 13. If I had then what is available today as outlets for the
technically minded teenager, Ham radio would have not even been on my
radar. With computers, the web, video games, etc. there are is much
competing for the already limited mindshare of today's youth.
Let's encourage others to think about the bigger picture and acknowledge
that Ham radio has a serious marketing problem. Dragging ourselves into
an internal fight about code vs. no-code is a waste of time. Everyone
else in the world has already decided for us and is voting daily with
where they spend their hobby dollars and time.
Unfortunately, the ARRL does not seem to get this basic issue either and
wastes money on efforts like the "Big Project". I'd like to see the
number of young new hams that are recruited, licensed and active 1 year
after programs so we can see the Ham/$ ratio!
I think we should all get behind a repeal of S25.5 and put our best
marketing minds together to develop other incentives to attract fresh
blood. It is the only way to prevent the demise of the Amateur service
over the next 20 years as the majority of current hams sadly have their
last QSO.
I'll put my time/money where my mouth is and offer any web hosting
services required to get the word out.
73 and Happy New Year to all,
Steve

I would like to throw this little rabbit into the midst of the wolf-pack
if
I may:
There is a strong chance that WRC-2003 or WRC-2006 will repeal S25.5
(the
requirement for Morse code proficiency as a precondition for access to
the
amateur bands below 30 MHz). If this does occur, and the FCC does not
footnote the requirement back in for the US, it is highly likely that
within
5 to 10 years of the change there will be precious little, if any, CW
activity left on the HF amateur bands. The whole question of key-clicks
will
then become more or less irrelevant.
There is no doubt that this possible course of events has also come to
the
attention of the product planners at the "Big Three".
Cheers for now, 73, Happy New Year,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

Reality check time Cliff ... most can't ...
So ... now how do you clean up the bands?
Interested to hear your solution ...
