I reported installing the mod two days ago. I would also like to say that
it was less difficult to access the modification points than I expected
based on the write-ups I had seen. I recommend releasing the fan assembly
(two screws mounted on the heat sink) right from the start as its connecting
wires were tight and initially I could not see/access how to release them.
Also, the photocopies of the boards showing mod locations were fuzzy at
best, clear photos on a web site would be reassuring. Descriptions of the
location helped a lot!
Now: my results. Were exqctly in line with the oscilliscope photos on
Tom's website, though I did the INRAD mod. Before, I got reports of
significant clix to the sides of my signal. After all reports have been,
"keying is perfect, outstanding, no clicks what so ever."
Regarding the AGC mod. While the IF board is folded up (I didn't disconnect
anything but the ribbon cables) an easy time to do it. Do I notice a
difference? Yes, I noticed immediately, not in copyability of weak signals,
but in the slowing down of the fast AGC. Previously, the AGC was so fast I
could actively hear it recovering, noise between CW characters, on the rise
between elements. Now, it stays steady. I have not heard a good pile-up
since doing it to see if weaker signals are more readible but would assume
so. in any case, the mod does what it was supposed to do.
Tuning the band once you know what you're listeing for, it is EASY to pick
out MP's. The words associated with them are not complimentary. Do the mod
;-)
