My 2 cents :
When I connected my radio to the PC, I have been advised that folks got
their FT1000MP CAT interface damaged due to electrical surges or currents
loop. This happened to me in the past as well with the TS850S's computer
interface. As I am in an area where lighting in common, I have used RS-232
to RS-232 Optical Isolator to complete isolate the radio serial port from
the computer. I use a unit manufactured by Patton Electronics (check the URL
below).
http://www.patton.com/cgi-patton/catalog-bin/display.cgi?model=590
They have four models depending on how many lines of your RS232 interface
you are protecting and how high is your max port baudrate. The 19K2 models
will work fine for this application. I have used the 7 lines model (594),
even though the CAT interface only has TX,RX and GND, because this model is
powered externally. The more economic models (590A/591A) picks energy from
the RS232 and don't need external PS. However as no control line is present
in the CAT interface it is likely that these units will not work.
So, if you are concerned about surges or undesired current loops, spend few
bucks on this device
Merry Xmas
