transceiver control, logging, propagation prediction, DX spot
collection, mapping, QSL route discovery, etc.

Everyone keeps saying you need only a serial cable. 

Not true.

You also need software that controls your radio. I use
Writelog for contests, and DX4Win for daily operaating,
and (with the aforementioned cable) they talk to the
radio ith only a little setup.
