The 9 pin cable is a "straight through," where most male-male cables are
"cross-over" or null-modem cables.  You only need three conductors -
rx/tx/gnd.  Straight through means tx to tx, rx to rx and gnd to gnd.  I
also recommend a small toroid at the rig end to kill any stray RF (rig
interface chip - a MAX232 variant - is surface mount - more fragile /
expensive then replacing a serial port if RF blows it).
