Eric, this answer to your question may not be too helpful. Actually a
crystal filter is a mechanical filter where the mechanical parts are plates
of quartz. When something is called a
Collins Mechanical filter it probably uses Ni-Span C or some other metal in
the mechanical parts. The mechanical vibration resonances are what are
used used in filter design. Quartz inherently has a much higher Q than
that of metal, so a quartz filter can have sharper edges than those made of
metal. Some people don't like sounds that go with a sharp edge, steep
sided filter, its a personal preference sort of thing. 73 jim w3cp
