[1000mp] Looking for some Quadra Owners

Got a couple of questions.
How 'automatic' is the tuner?
How 'automatic' is the band switching? 
I'll be using a MP and do I need a cable from band data connector?

Especially interested on it's durability in rtty contesting/dxing.
I'm aware you should power down for long transmission ragchewing.
But how about short duty cycle search and pounce or contest cqing?
