I have both the TS-850s and Mark V Field. Having used the 850 for over ten years,
mostly on Top Band, I found the noise blanker to be very useful in suppressing
line noise which often peaked S9 on the 850 S meter. However, the Kenwood's
blanker was affected by the presence of strong signals on the band, depending
upon setting of the blanking level.
Before purchase,I was concerned about the performance of the MP Field blanker
at my QTH but have been very satisfied. I did have to increase the setting to
A13 from the default A12 to improve performance. The "B" blanker did not seem
to have much effect on the noise at my QTH. Use of the blanker does create
distortion of strong signals but not as much as the Kenwood TS-850's blanker.
The Field's EDSP Noise Reduction is also very
helpful in cutting down noise. My conclusion is that each noise environment
is different and experimentation with the blanker types, settings, and EDSP
controls is necessary to maximize performance of the radio.
