Thanks for the responses, but no one has the answer yet. Here
is the additional information that people have requested.

Some people have mentioned AFSK vs FSK. I have the AFSK
signals connected to the packet jack. When I press the PKT button on the
front panel and send RTTY through the TNC, I get perfect AFSK transmission.
The MIC gain controls the ALC as advertised. (I set the MIC gain so the
ALC indication is barely visible on the meter.)

This is an FSK problem. I have the FSK signals connected to the
RTTY jack. When I press the RTTY button on the front panel and send
RTTY through the TNC, the ALC goes off scale and the RF signal
is distorted.

This does not appear to be a TNC problem. I get the same behavior
using MMTTY, a HAL DXP38, and a PK 232.  I even wired a special
connector with push buttons to short the PTT and shift (FSK Tx) lines to
ground when the buttons are pressed. I see the same behavior that I
have described when I send FSK with my thumbs.

People have asked about the TNC settings. I'm fairly certain that these
settings are correct. I can communicate using RTTY FSK, but the
recipients complain the distorted signal. I am unaware of any setting
on the radio for the FSK mode. If there are any, please let me know.

I get the same behavior when I am in the RTTY mode (RTTY button on the
front panel engaged) and I press the MOX button.

Thanks again for your help.

I'm trying to use FSK RTTY on my FT-1000 Mark V. Everything
seems to work except when I assert PTT, the ALC meter goes
off scale and the output is distorted.

I can't find any control for the ALC in the RTTY FSK mode. I'm
missing something, or my radio is broken.

Can someone help?

Thanks, Bryan
