Tom,
That's not unusual 5-10 db over S-9, the IF gain plays a significant role in
the S-meter, check the hidden menu and I believe its 9-1 and see what the
gain is set for. A setting of 9 to 12 is typical. If you have the INRAD
mod unit installed the gain is 9-11 and without most report a value of
11-14. The FT1000MP is stingy, mine will show a S-9 and on the FT-847
sitting right next to it will show S-9 plus 20 to 30. It's all relative,
S/N ratio is what's important. I thought you were having a receiver problem
but it doesn't sound like you are.
