Rich,
I connected the FT1000MP PACKET AFSK out and in audio functions direct to
the PC sound card without any isolation to get me started. Worked great and
for over a year had no problems. Was using a 16 bit SoundBlaster card that
had line in and line out plus an amplified speaker out which gave me several
choices on how to use the Sound card. Well things do change, motherboard
took a dump and so I replace it with a 2 Ghz MSI / AMD processor - mother
board, bought a PCI SoundBlaster card that did not have the amplified audio
output but a line-out that connects to amplified speakers thus I had to
share the AFSK input with speakers.
Not a great idea so I ran down to the local Radio Shack, bought some 1/8"
jacks, two (2) 600 ohm 1:1 transformers and a 1k fixed resistor and a 10 K
variable. Took about 2 hours to construct the project. Now both the audio
in and out to the FT1000MP are isolated from the PC, wasn't needed before
but, I am glad I did it now. With this configuration I can drive the
speakers the way I want with their on board adjustments, set the level in
the PC software and adjust the AFSK - IN to the FT via the 10 K pot.
Conclusion, You can wire direct the AFSK in-out from the FT to the Soundcard
providing you do not have any unusual ground loops, easy to check using the
monitor function, or spend less than $20.00 and a little time an assure
yourself of isolation. There are several WEB site that give out wiring
diagrams for isolation and discuss the correct setup fro PSK31 or RTTY and
any sound card digital function. I hear allot of good clean signals on the
band which says most everyone is paying attention to correct setup but every
once in a while you hear some newbees that have spurs all over the place
causing QRM. Check out http://www.va3cr.net/ for inf. and discussions on
you question. A great site. Have fun on PSK and try RTTY and MFSK.
With regards to the filter you can't go wrong with the INADS at
http://www.qth.com/inrad/ in addition to the standard Yaesu supplied
filters I have the 500 Hz CW filter, the 1800 Hz SSB which I am very happy
with. If your rig hasn't had the IF mod or CW click mod done I would
suggest that you invest in them and install them when you open up the case
for the filter installation. The IF mod is the most important and really
improved my 1995 FT vintage rig. Good luck, hope I helped.

Subject: [1000mp] Getting ready for PSK-31, and a filter question
I went into my local HRO last weekend, ready to build/buy an interface
to enable PSK-31. But the "droid" behind the counter said noone in their
shop had ever used that mode (!) and he had no idea. So, naturally,
I'm turning to the list here for help.
Can I just route the AF (fixed gain) audio out to my PC sound card,
or do I need one of those isolator/interface boxes, like a
"Rigblaster"?
Also, I want to buy a filter for SSB, but I've never ever been
exposed to a rig which supported filtering, much less offering
you a choice! So where should I look to begin? Eventually, I plan
of getting them all, but, for now, I can afford just one (And
I know, I know, but I want a Yaesu filter, not the Inrad model. I'm
just not comfortable making mods to the rig which involve snipping
wires).
Thanks!
