Hi Tom -- my original reason for doing so was that I wanted to record QSOs 
using the AF Out jack on the back of the radio, and the sidetone does not 
appear on that output, while the monitor does.  Now it's as much habit as 
anything else, I guess, because I record from the headphone jack on my SO2R 
box.
