On my Mark 5, the clarifier jumped from early on.  I was told that they use 
a mechanical encoder there which sometimes gets flakey.  The Yaesu tech 
said the part is cheap but disassembling the front panel to replace it is a 
fairly large undertaking.  I had it replaced under warranty so can't quote 
dollars.
