I also have what I believe are/is an intermittent relay in my MP.  It only
malfunctions at the beginning of contests, and does this so reliably, I
started to wonder if it was something in the configuration of my station
(which gets changed-over from DX chasing to contesting for the weekends).
Turns out its not the station config.

I just finished the WPX trouble-free by operating the MP with the cover off
all weekend, and keeping a small rubber mallot handy!  About once every
three hours or so, a small tap on the heatsink kept the radio humming
along.  I do have to FIX THIS however.

I plan to do a lot of 'tap testing' to find the relay or circuit trace that
is acting up.  I have fixed a lot of intermittents over the years by
tapping with the eraser-end of a pencil until I found the bad component.
