Just a few comments after reading K4XL's post.
There are two separate issues being discussed here,
which basically boil down to:
1. long delays in getting gear repaired by Yaesu's
service depot in California
2. quality issues with new (Mark V) radios
I would suggest that number 2 may be a non-issue.
There are a lot more Mk V's sold by Yaesu than other
hf rigs by the competition. Do the statistics really
confirm that there is any quality issue whatsoever?
To hear K4XL and others indicate they would switch to
Ten-Tec, rather than Yaesu is a real head scratcher.
I invite anyone to closely inspect the quality of
construction and pcb design in a current Yaesu radio
and compare with Ten-Tec. It's not even close. Sure
Ten-Tec service is only a phone call away, but you're
going to need them.
Yes, number 1 (service delay) is a real issue and
Yaesu deserves a lot of flack for letting the service
department degenerate to where it has gotten today.
To have to wait 3 months or longer to have an older
Yaesu radio serviced is unpardonable, as is the
difficulty in getting a human being on the phone or
any sort of accurate status/estimate.
I feel strongly that Yaesu makes far and away the best
hf rig for the serious dx'er/contester, that the
1000MP/MkV is the best "all-around" hf rig ever, and
that the next rig to buy will probably be Yaesu's
response to the Ten-Tec Orion.
My 2 cents,
Tim
