When you're programming the keyer using the FH-1, make sure you have 
menu item 7-0 set to "Iambic 2" (automatic character spacing). I 
don't use the keyer set this way (it tends to show off paddle 
inaccuracies), but it must be used when programming, to get the 
characters to sound right.

I just set 7-0 to "Iambic 2", program the memories, and then set it 
back to "Iambic 1" before operating. Works OK that way (as well as 
the MP keyer can be expected to work...I use an external keyer most 
of the time, but the external one doesn't do automatic serial 
numbers, so I'm forced to use the internal keyer for some contests).
