Hi Thomas,
If you are interested in cw contesting, I would suggest you consider the
Inrad 250 Hz filters. For over a year I have been using the stock 500
Hz filter. Finally broke down and bought an Inrad 250 Hz 8 Meg IF
filter. What a difference! It was as if the bands were now twice as
wide. It is now much easier to separate signals and actually copy them.
Also much easier to find holes for running. A bit hard on the guys
right next to you with 500 Hz filters but we are talking about
competitition.
Why 8 Mhz instead of 455 kHz if only buying one filter? If your narrow
filter is at 455 kHz then close in, strong signals that you can't even
hear because they're just outside the passband will take over your AGC
and make competitive contesting a really miserable experience. An 8 MHz
filter blocks those signals before they reach the AGC system.
The next thing I'm going to get (after the Force 12) is another 250 Hz
filter, this one at 455 kHz.
Hope this helps, Thomas.
