Subject: Roofing Filter - Kenwood SM 220 Station Monitor MP/MkV
It is unfortunate that you received incomplete information. As posted on
this reflector several times over the last few years, there is a reason that
there is not a IF out put jack on the MP or the MkV.
One of the challenges for the Mp/MkV is going to be the four-pole roofing
filter that has a 12khz bandwidth in the first I.F.(see info on page 9 of
the Technical Overview brochure). Obviously to get more than 12khz of
bandwidth on the panadpter display, the take off point from the i.f. has to
be ahead of this. A mixer will need to provide enough gain at the desired
i.f. frequency required by the panadapter in use (mine is between eight and
nine megahertz), and not load the MP or introduce noise or distortion.
Until that becomes a possibility, I use my SM-220 solid state scope with the
panadapter module on my IC-720 for seeking the fast elusive signals on hf.
Then I plug them into the memory of the MP for further follow up.

Subject: [1000mp] Kenwood SM 220 Station Monitor Connect to Mark V
I inquired of Yaesu, about connecting the SM-220 to the Mark V......here is
their reply....
Dear Sir:
Thanks for your e-mail.
Not knowing exactly how "invasive" something has to be before it is no
longer "non invasive," there are no points in the mark-V that would
allow access either in the first or second IFs without going in breaking
solder traces, and then evaluating the impact on impedance, etc. The
capability just is not there, either for panadapter or for signal
pattern monitoring with the SM-220, on a non-invasive basis.
But thanks for asking.
Kind regards,
Chip Margelli, K7JA
YAESU Amateur Products
Vertex Standard USA, Inc.
It certainly seems hard to believe that they can not recommend a connection
point for either IF, at least a simple or non-invasive connection......I
will repeat my request for information to technical support in Japan......
Anyone who has already accomplished this is kindly requested to reply......

Mike Schatzberg
