FWIW, I find the opposite to be true - weak signals are easier to copy on
topband with 8-4 in the "Tuned" position. Only time I use "Flat" on topband
is when I can't hear band noise and desire the extra 6dB or so of gain.
BTW, I use an unamplified Beverage and still find the MP usually has
sufficient gain in the Tuned position.
