Danny,
I've had an FT1000D continuously since 1990. I replaced my original in 1999
for a new one. Bought a Mk V about 6 months after they hit the market. I
was able to A/B the radios. The D receiver is a bit quieter than the Mk
V--no hiss issues or Inrad mod required--but the receivers are very close.
The D controls are very straight forward--there are no menus. The Mk V has
more flexibility particularly regarding CW because of the DSP plus you can
customize the operation of the radio to you via menus for contests regarding
tuning alternatives, offsets etc.
I had decided to sell one or the other--I didn't need two as I have also
have quite a few Drake and Collins stations going. My operating is
principally DXing and contesting. I only use the boatanchors for an
occational ragchew with a fellow boatanchor guy. I had a very tough time
deciding which radio to sell--they both have advantages and disadvantages.
I sold the D when a fellow came along and was willing to pay me $400 less
than I paid for it over 2 years ago. I could have just as easily sold the Mk
V. I would have liked to have kept them both. You can't go wrong with
either.
