It took a lot of planning and even more work, but I built a SuperCable for
PC to MP connections.
The goal was:
1. to eliminate the rats nest.
2. hopefully cut down the rfi I would sometimes hear in the monitor
3. hopefully cut down some of the computer hash.
4. make moving/rearranging/reconnecting easy
I picked up a good hunk of twisted and shielded cable at Dayton.
Lots of good quality phono, stereo, monaural etc. connectors also.
After staring at those tiny din pin connectors through a lighted magnifying
glass for more hours than I want to admit to, "It's Alive".
Sound card IN and OUT to both Packet and Rtty connectors for FSK/RTTY and
PSK/PACKET.
Com 1 transistor/resistor interface for ptt, cw, fsk.
PTT is paralled with a foot switch and a pushbutton on the desk.
CW to the rear MP connector with two sub female connectors in parallel for
Memory Keyer, aux paddle, straight key. (Computer CW via DXBase/Writelog)
Audio from Writelog or my DVK to the Patch Connector.
All twisted pairs have ferrite beads on each end at the connector.
Shields grounded at each end.
All connectors are color coded.
The cable is long enough that I can move the rig or pc and not yank one or
the other off the desk.
And all connections to the MP have a parallel connector that can be
connected to my backup computer.
(I some times run RITTY on the back up computer to compare the same rtty
signal between RITTY and MMTTY.)
So besides the required coax, power cord and ground. Only thing on the back
of the MP is the is the RS232 cable to the back of the MP and the
SuperCable.
Time will tell about the rfi and computer hash. It seems better but I
haven't cranked the power up yet.
Now I have to gather all the notes I wrote and make a understandable
schematic.
