[1000mp] FT-1000MP Mk5 Field Problem

Hi Ted
I too brought back a Field from Dayton and like you fitted a 400Hz 455 kHz
Inrad filter. Until now, I hadn't noticed the problem you mention.
However, I have just taken a look at it on a very quiet band. 10m is
absolutely dead here. I can hear the problem you mention if I turn the AF
gain way up. Yes, there is a significant click noticeable with the Inrad
400Hz in circuit that isn't there without it. However, this click is
independent of the setting of Moni level. The higher I set Moni the less I
notice the click.
I have to say though, I hope you didn't buy the MP for its QSK capability!
I would describe it as serviceable though far from comfortable. Kenwood
rigs are a lot slicker at QSK. (Well, the 930, 940 and 870 are anyway.) I
also have an original MP and can tell you that the Field sidetone in QSK is
better than the original MP which is extremely clicky. Both are better at
QSK than the FT1000D I almost bought about 10 years back....that was so bad
in its QSK capability as to be unusable. I guess there has been some
progress. A bit more wouldn't go amiss though.
While I like to use QSK, the limitations of the Yaesu rigs in this area mean
that in practice I mostly use them in semi break in with a fast T/R
turnaround rather than in full bk-in mode. I find this rather less
punishing over a long operating period. When I really want to QSK I opt for
my old faithful TS930 or my Elecraft K2. These are rigs that know how to do
it!
