PL-259's are virtually perfect.

You can totally ignore the "bump" caused by SO-239's below a few 
hundred MHz because the "bump" is very short and has a very modest 
SWR.

A typical SO-239 is about 35-40 ohms, and the length of the 1.4:1 or 
less SWR "bump" is about 1/2 inch. That translates to a SWR bump of:

10MHz 1.002:1
100MHz 1.02:1
1000MHz 1.20:1

Unless his rig is running at 450MHz, properly installed connectors of 
any type connectors, including phono plugs like Collins used at HF,
