[1000mp] Mark V newbie Q's

Hi Julio:

Welcome to the BB and congrats on the new rig ! As to your questions, I can
only speak to my observations - the other guys who have much more experience
I'm sure will chime in - and I will learn something too ;) I have noticed
the same things you have.

If I am listening to a station on 14 MHz on the Sub VFO, I can hear fine if
I have VFO A 10 - 24.5 MHz, but not at all if I hit 7 or 28 MHz. I never do
cross-band anything but I do a lot of same-band split. I believe this was
the way it was designed. The fellas here will tell you that the Inrad
filters are superb, but they'll tell you to get a narrower filter than 2.8
KHz. I have a full set of the stock Yaesu filters, and I have been very
happy. You may wish to look at Menu 8-9 and slide these values a bit into
the negative range (-0.1 - -0.2). Bill, W4ZV, had some nice comments on this
back in February of this year (which I saved for further reference) which
you might look up in the archives. As to why one would use a wider 3rd IF
filter in conjunction with a narrower 2nd IF - I'm not sure - so I'll wait
and learn from others. I haven't used AM but FM is definitely touchy on the
power. The AGC, when disengaged, also disengages the S-meter.

Hope this helps - and have fun !

Subject: [1000mp] Mark V newbie Q's

Hello all, I'm a 5 days old owner of a Mark V. Haven't slept at all, glued
to the radio. I'm in love, my YL is not.

My apologies for asking these questions since I'm sure they've come across
before.

1 - Receive strength on VFO B degrades as VFO A moves farther away in
frequency. I thought it had something to do with the preamps but both
"flat" and "tuned" have the same effect. Is "dual receive" limited to same
band?

2 - I have a 2.8 Khz (#715) and 400 Hz (#703) crystal filters from Inrad
in my FT-847, will they work in the Mark V?

3 - Why would I ever want to engage a filter on 3rd IF stage that's wider
than the filter in 2nd IF stage? Did I misunderstand this from the manual?

4 - AM and FM PO moves very fast from 0 to 200 watts by the time the RF
PWR button is around 9 o'clock. Is this normal? Yes, I quickly bring it
down to 50 watts when in those modes.

5 - When setting AGC to off, the S meter stops deflecting. What gives?

Thanks,

Julio
