I looked at the chart Ed and then went back and re-read your message ---
then back to the chart -- then off to one of Tom's messages.

Somehow, I think I would like to have some definition of 'good' be discussed
and more or less agreed upon. It would be nice if there is some existing rig
that is classified as 'good'. Then it might be nice to have one or two
radios identified that are not classified as 'good'. Finally, if the
spectral plot for each of these radio was available to look at I might
finally be able to get a feel for 'what does it all mean'.

It is not clear to me at this point that a spectral plot that which is -60
dB at 5 kHz is significantly better than -50 dB at 5 kHz. I suppose that the
lower level is better, but engineering life seems to produce unintended, not
always pleasant side effects when we push some one thing to the limit. At
this point the definition of 'clicks' seems about the same as the famous
definition of pornography, "..you know it when you see it" (or hear it in
the case of clicks). I think it would be good to build some sort of database
of .wav files that match spectral plots so that we can get an idea of what
the plot implies when the radio is operated on the band. Since we can
download .wav files just as we download .jpg or .pdf files that night be an
interesting way of building shared 'click' experience for the reader of the
reports.
