If one must tune up while operating split, by all means do not do this on
the DX station's frequency.
The way I do it is in this order:
1) Tune in the DX station on the main VFO
2) Press the SPLIT button. This sets the sub VFO to the same mode as the
main VFO, with the sub VFO as the transmit VFO.
3) Now tune up, transmitting on the sub VFO. That's all there is to it.
There are a couple of ways to go key down in order to tune up:
1) If on CW, turn off the KEYER (or BK) switch.
2) Press your paddle to either the dit or dah position and tune up.
or:
1) Go to the RTTY mode.
2) Press SUB, then press RTTY to put the sub VFO into the RTTY mode.
3) Engage the MOX button, and tune up.
4) When tuned up, disengage the MOX button, then press SUB, then press
the desired mode button to put the sub VFO back into the desired mode.
Those that have the FH-1 keypad or my Mpcw program may use that method of
tuning up.
Whatever frequency you tune up on, make sure you're not on a frequency
already in use.
