Actually, I always use the contour knob in its first CCW position, which
Yaesu calls the "BPF" (band-pass filter) position. In this position,
the DSP CW audio filter is active when I turn the EDSP switch on. I use
the 60 Hz menu setting for the DSP CW audio filter, which improves the
S/N ratio the most when digging those weak CW signals out of the noise on
160m.

If the signal is really deep down in the noise, I additionally use the IF
Shift and Width controls to further narrow the passband. Using CW-USB
with my 250 Hz xtal filters, both the shift and width controls are about
1/2 of the way to the first marker to the left of center to completely
close the window, so they're set at a little less than that.

These controls are very useful. Icom calls the feature "twin passband
tuning" and Kenwood calls it "VBT" (Variable Bandwidth Tuning).
