I look at the Main (RX) and Sub (TX) frequency displays
for this. I normally set my TX to some even .10 kHz frequency
and my RX to either + or - .20 kHz of that depending on whether
I'm using LSB CW or USB CW. Of course I also use fairly broad
filters in CW contests so I can hear the guys that cannot zero
beat. If I set up the RX as above, I can easily hear guys + and -
3-400 Hz either side of zero beat if I also set Pitch to about
450 Hz. I normally set Pitch as low as possible (300 Hz) for
DX-ing but contests are a completely different situation where
you really want to hear what is going on around you rather than
just optimizing one frequency.
Once you get accustomed to this it is very easy. I just
cannot imagine spending hours in a CW contest tuning with that
little clarifier knob! I've done this for almost 20 years now
and previously used the A and B VFO's in my TS930S the same way.
Although it did not have simultaneous display of both TX and
RX like the MP has, it did display the TX frequency when
transmitting.
Try this and I'll bet you'll never go back to a clarifier.
I don't even know if my clarifier is defective since I never use it!
