[1000mp] MP and INRAD Filters

Hello Ed and All Yaesu Fans....

I also changed my 2.0 Yaesu filters for the Inrads this weekend also....I am
definitely pleased with the results, both the audio quality and interference
rejection are improved....The shift and width controls seem to work smoother
and are more easily adjusted for optimum rejection of unwanted
interference....

I have previously written here about the issues I had regarding audio
quality and signal to noise ratio problems when working weaker signals...I
must say that the settings recommended by Bill, W4ZV do indeed improve
things quite a bit, Thanks Bill!!....

Now, on to my next observation and question.....It appears to me that the
Mark V has two product detectors, one is analog, the other is
digital....Meaning, when you select the filtering enhancements for the
receiver, either 100-3100, 300-2800, or OFF, when you select OFF, you are
enabling analog product detection....the other settings are digital product
detection with associated filter enhancements...or so it appears to me, it
is not so stated in the manual....Is this assumption on my part correct?....

I had been listening to the receiver with either of the two digital modes
engaged, not with the analog mode....I have seen many a recommendation to
select either of the digital modes....My experience says that the recovered
audio quality is far superior using the analog (OFF) setting, and that the
signal to noise ratio seems improved as well....This is true for all filter
selections, from wide open to my new narrow, 1.8's.....You still are able to
engage the IDTC tracking control, with the analog selection, and it appears
to offer some improvement to the operation of the shift and width controls
in avoiding interference....

So, there it is...DXing seems much easier with Bill's settings, along with
the "analog product detection".....the weaker SSB signals are much easier to
recover, and more readable...

I still do not particularly find the Contours helpful, and still prefer to
use my outboard audio DSP for the final touch up, using a Texas Instruments
Chip in the DSP unit.....I can operate the rig with no white noise at all,
and read the very weak ones quite easily now...I may still add the Inrad
modification later, to see if it will further simplify tuning, and eliminate
my use of the outboard DSP...more on this later....

Happy DXing.....
