[1000mp] noise increase in GEN mode

I was just checking my line noise situation after some work by the power
company yesterday, and noticed something interesting.  On 80 meters, as
soon as I tune below 3500 kHz and the GEN light comes on, there is a
dramatic increase (several S units) in the noise level.  

Does anyone know the workings of the 1000MP/Mark 5 well enough to suggest
where this extra gain is coming from?  Just curious.
