Graeme, this is a common problem with DC version of the MP. I have been
plagued with intermittently since I've had mine. There are several
cures that work at at least temporarily. Some of these are recommended
by Yaesu in a bulletin.
1. Clean your PSU terminals and cable terminals with contact cleaner.
2. Solder the connections between the power cable terminals and the fuse
holder terminals. They are normally just crimped connections.
3. Put a 0.1 uFd capacitor across your power supply terminals.
4. Shorten your power cable as much as possible.
You'll probably have ot clean the PSU terminals periodically to prevent
recurrences. The problem usually manifests in my MP by generating a
chirp, which can be minimized by reducing output power.

At first I thought it was rf getting into the rig, but after some expermentation on antenna and dummy load It seemed as though the problem was present on both whenever the power was higher than 50 watts.
