Phil,
The short answers are, Yes, No and No.
A bit more detail.
I have been using the FTV1000 with an original MP for some time now, no
problems. My only concern was the possibility of accidentally blowing the
transverter by transmitting with the full 100W into its RX port, so, after
some thought I decide to use the rx antenna input on the MP rather than the
normal 'antenna A' connector on the MP as specified, (TX is through the
transverter output). This does mean I must remember to press the 'rx ant'
button when transverting, but on the other hand it should be pretty
difficult to blow up the FTV1000.
I have only recently obtained the FRB-5 relay board. This is an easy fit,
(certainly no harder than fitting extra filters) and makes dual use (HF & 6)
of the MP a lot easier, as the MP is now switched into transvert mode when
the FTV1000 is switched on. Although my MP has a transverter switch under
the bug hatch, I gather some don't, the FRB-5 will work with either.
Also there seems to be seem confusion about the FRB-5, as far as I can tell
it is for the MP only not the Field.
With or without the relay kit an FP-29 power supply is still needed to power
the transverter.
This link has a copy of the instruction leaflet, (in Japanese, though the
diagrams are the same).

As I live in the UK I purchased my relay kit from Martin Lynch in London,
although it was not a stock item they obtained one from Yaesu within 24
hours and it was cheaper than either of the two USA dealer I checked!
